Student Support Services
Chinook Middle School is committed to meeting the social, emotional, behavioral, and mental health needs of our students. To achieve this goal, we utilize the Multi-Tiered System of Support framework for social-emotional learning and behavior, referred to as MTSS-SEB. This framework allows us to take an organized and integrated approach to address the overall well-being of our students.
What is MTSS-SEB?
MTSS-SEB is a data-driven, evidence-based framework designed to systematically address the social-emotional and behavioral needs of all students in our district. MTSS-SEB enables us to create a supportive and inclusive environment that fosters emotional well-being, positive behavior, and academic success.
The continuum of supports:
Tier 1 - Universal Supports: These foundational supports are provided to all students in a school community. They encompass evidence-based practices, proactive classroom management strategies, and a nurturing school culture that fosters social and emotional learning for everyone.
Tier 2 - Targeted Interventions: For students who require additional support, Tier 2 offers targeted interventions designed to address student needs. These interventions are designed to address specific social, emotional, behavioral, or mental health needs.
Tier 3 - Intensive Interventions: At this level, students with more significant and persistent needs receive intensive, individualized support. This tier involves collaboration between educators, specialists, and families to develop a personalized plan to address the student's unique challenges and goals.
Benefits of MTSS-SEB
- Improved Academic Outcomes: When students' social-emotional and behavioral needs are addressed, they are better equipped to engage in learning and achieve academic success.
- Enhanced School Climate: MTSS-SEB fosters a positive and inclusive Parent/Guardian/Student Nomination Form school environment where students, staff, and families feel valued and supported.
- Reduction in Behavioral Challenges: By proactively addressing behavioral challenges, we can reduce discipline referrals and create a more harmonious learning environment.
- Equity and Inclusion: MTSS-SEB promotes equity by ensuring that all students, regardless of their background, receive the support they need to thrive.
PBIS
Four "R's" at Chinook Middle School
What is PBIS?
Chinook uses a school wide system called Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports, PBIS for short. It is currently one of the most effective school behavior management approaches in the United States.
PBIS Definition:
PBIS is a framework or approach for assisting school personnel in adopting and organizing evidence-based behavioral interventions into an integrated continuum that enhances academic and social behavior outcomes for all students. PBIS IS NOT a packaged curriculum, scripted intervention, or manualized strategy. PBIS IS a prevention-oriented way for school personnel to (a) organize evidence-based practices, (b) improve their implementation of those practices, and (c) maximize academic and social behavior outcomes for students. PBIS supports the success of ALL students.
At Chinook Middle School, Chinook Bucks are used to give immediate feedback when students are seen following school-wide rules. Students observed following the Big 3: Showing Respect, Making Good Decisions, and/or Solving Problems are great candidates for being acknowledged.
Reward System
Students also can use their Chinook Bucks to purchase items from the PBIS Store and/or enter Chinook’s weekly raffles.
